machine stopped even starting up.  I'm about 95% sure my MB is fried/fucked.  I really need to get back in business pretty quickly.  I have odds and ends for components, but honestly, I don't trust myself to build something entirely from scratch.  what I need is a fully-built machine that I can upgrade, at a decent price.  I really can't exceed $800ish.  time is of the essence, but if someone trustworthy wants to pick out all the components I'd need outside of, say, hard drive + power supply, that works, too.  hepl.

I could also build a machine w/cyberpower pretty cheap: http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Mega_Special_II/

Most of the pre-builts are pretty shady, but you can definately just get away with buying a new motherboard and case, you already know the processor, power supply, and video card are still good no sense in spending any more than what you need, but I would definately pick up a new case the one you have is pretty poor cooling for that current setup.

Just out of curiosity have you tried swapping out that new poweer supply you bought for the old one to see if that is the issue?

I can give you any help you need re-building, but definitely try swapping out that power supply first, the last time I thought my machine was fried it ended up the power supply (which is a pretty common problem for machines not powering up).

Here is the best motherboard available for the AMD platform: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130161

This probably the best value for a case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042

That memory I gave you would probably work just fine with that motherboard (considering I have the same motherboard and it worked just fine with it).

Only thing you will need besides those components is the OS did your dell come with an install disk?

If not you need to buy an OEM copy of windows: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116485

*Edit*

If you really don't trust the memory I gave you than this is the way to go: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145177

Windows 32-bit operating systems can only recognize a total of something like 3.12GB of memory so if you wanted to go with that than a 4GB kit is the way to go here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145176

The only way to recognize more than 3GB of memory is to get Windows 64-bit which would probably cause you more headaches I think.

I had cyberpower make a machine for me.  The machine itself is fine, but it took way to long for them to make it.  I would probably just do the repairs yourself.

after much consideration, I opted to go with a cyberpower machine.  I really don't have the time or desire to rebuild my machine.  I did try swapping in the old power supply and that plain wasn't it.  In terms of the time it takes to rebuild a new PC from the ground up, and the fact that I'd have to buy a new HD since I do not want to format mine...  I'm looking at minimum 400 + shipping + tax + time.  I was able to get a pretty nice intel dual-core cyberpower PC shipped for $611.  here's hoping that goes smoothly.

Don't get that HDD. Both of your MoBo selections support SATA, so buy a SATA HDD. Faster, and less space-intensive as far as internals are concerned. Plus, 140gb for 40 bucks is something of a rip off. You can get 300-500gb for like 100, which is a much better deal in the end. Check this out:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136204
90 bucks, 400 gigs at SATA speeds. Can't beat it!

As for your case,
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021&Tpk=antec%20900

That's the case I use, and I'm running a very high performance machine. It has cooling out the ass stock, has amazing build quality, and even has an optional input for a side 120mm fan (which I have).

It's only classified as a "mid" tower, but in reality it's much bigger then a mid, and is well spacious enough to accommodate pretty much any component without being cramped, and it leaves a nice channel between the MoBo and drive bays, equipped with harasses, for wire management.

Rest looks solid, though you might want to look into a different heat sink for your processor. Stock is no good.

that case is a bit expensive =x.  anything in the $70/$80 range?  also: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134 for cooling

For the HD I would go for serial ATA: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148261

Or if you need to use and IDE100 drive than this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148141

For the motherboard definitely Biostar over the ECS.

That processor is fine.

The case I listed before is still the best value for the $$.

If you are getting aftermarket cooling, why go with a retail boxed CPU?

And yeah, that case rome linked is the best you can get at a great price (shipping inc)

Unless you are going to overclock or something you'll be fine with the cooler it comes with.

Heatsink def works ;) Arctic Cooling knows their stuff. Good design too,  especially if you can get a case with a top mounted exhaust (like the 900).

Oh, as for the MoBo selection, with serious component, I tend to go with brand names, especially EVGA. Their driver/firmware support is awesome, their website is easily accessible and in English, and most of their stuff has a lifetime warranty, meaning if anything ever shits on you again, you can just RMA it.

Might wanna look into MoBos within your price range from them, or another top-tier manufacturer with a solid warranty (I think ASUS gives like 5 years, but their website is garbage).

And, to be honest, any case worth building a reliable computer in is going to be about 100 dollars, unless you can find it on sale somewhere (when I picked up my 900, newegg was selling it for like 90 for some holiday). That said:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042

Similar design to the 900, it's antec so the build quality is high, and it has all the important exhaust mountings. It won't refrigerate your rig, but it'll keep it in the green

Not only this, but getting some of those aftermarket HSF's secure is probably the biggest pain in the ass out of all the assembly req's
