Mongol

Great foriegn film imo, best one I have seen in a while. Its about Gangis Khan before he came to power. It is in subtitles but it is worth the read for the story, costumes, scenery and the acting was good.

Boy A
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1078188/

British film about a young ex-con Jack, newly released from serving a prison sentence for a murder he committed as a child.

I personally thought it was a great script and the acting by Andrew Garfield was great. It is a tragedy. The conversations and portrayal of this story could have happened to anyone one down the street but like life.... it is slow moving and dull for someone not looking for a thinker movie so you are fair warned. Not sure if its a date movie either so I would recommend watching on a saturday or sunday if you have a chance.

Bigger Stronger Faster*

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1151309/
Quote
In America, we define ourselves in the superlative: we are the biggest, strongest, fastest country in the world. Is it any wonder that so many of our heroes are on performance enhancing drugs? Director Christopher Bell explores America's win-at-all-cost culture by examining how his two brothers became members of the steroid-subculture in an effort to realize their American dream.  Written by BSF Film

Personal comments:

Great movie for a documentary. Helped me know more about something that has been demonized by the main media. I know I have my personal views on steroids but I would highly recommend watching this if you ever passed judgment on people using steroids to hear the other side of the story. Also the medical facts about steroids his down right hilarious. Favorite factoid was that multivitamins cause more fatalities than steroids.

I really like documentaries.  My favorite of all time is "Tom Dowd and the Language of Music".  This guy might be the most fascinating person that no one has ever heard of.  Some of his accomplishments:

Worked on the atomic bomb during college

Basically reinvented modern recording (8 track recording, stereo sound, basically all recording techniques after 1950 to today)

Some of the artists he's worked with:

Ray Charles
Aretha Franklin
John Coltrane
Charlie Park
Thelonius Monk
Eric Clapton (solo, Derek and the Dominos, Cream)
The Allman Brothers Band
and few thousand others

basically anyone worth a shit from Atlantic or Stax records from the 60's til he died recently.

Anyway, I just found it pretty fascinating that one man had such a huge impact on science, music, pop culture, and so many other things.  It's a very well done documentary and has tons of interviews with people he worked with, as well as tons of old video of people recording that hadn't been seen til this movie.  If you are a big fan of documentary film or the history of modern music, this is as good as it gets.  Never seen it for sale, but it randomly comes on IFC all year round.

Ill keep an eye out for it... maybe its on torrents but I doubt it since that is such a fickle crowd.

Watch this steroid movie if you have some spare time and tell me what you think because I am not a big documentary guy but I thought for a seemingly amateur he did a good job (something Bell, the director).

I haven't had time to track down Bigger Stronger Faster yet, but everything I've seen/heard says its the shit, so I'll check it out soon hopefully.  Here are a few other really good documentaries:

Maxed Out:  About the ease of getting credit and going into debt in the USA.  Also talks a lot about how the credit card companies target people they know can't pay, and how this could fuck up the economy in the "future" (was filmed a few years ago or so, basically predicts everything happening now).  Pretty timely film given current economic outlook for the USA.

Cocaine Cowboys: The real story about the guys that ran drugs from Columbia to Miami.  Basically the real version of Blow and Scarface put together.

When the Levees Broke :  Real people, real talk, no bullshit.
